Patients should:
  • Wear a comfortable two piece outfit to the exam.
  • Not use deodorants, powders or lotions under arms or around the breast area.
  • Remove any necklaces and/or chains prior to examination.
  • Be advised that routine screening exams usually take 20-25 minutes, but allow up to 50 minutes when scheduling a diagnostic mammogram.
  • Bring all reports and films pertaining to or related to this exam.

Exam Day:

  • Two basic views are taken of each breast, with compression. Compression of the breast is essential in order to: spread the breast evenly over the cassette, to make the tissue density more even, to immobilize the breast, and to reduce scattered radiation.
  • Try to avoid this examination if you have painful breasts prior to menstruation. The examination takes approximately 30 minutes and your doctor should receive the result within a week.

Please try to obtain your previous mammogram films and reports.
