bring all reports and films pertaining to or related to your exam.
ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND
Patients
should:
-
Not eat or drink after midnight on the day of the exam.
Take medications if needed with a very minimal amount of water.
PELVIC
ULTRASOUND
Patients
should:
- Drink
32 oz of water a full hour prior to exam. This will allow the
water to move from the stomach and fill the bladder by exam time.
They should not void prior to the exam.
OBSTETRICAL
ULTRASOUND
Patients
should:
- First
trimester (first 3 months of pregnancy): Drink four (4) 8 oz glasses
of water (32 oz total) one hour prior to appointment time. The
patient should NOT use the bathroom since a distended bladder
is needed. The patient may eat normally.
- Second
trimester (4th through 6th months): Drink 3-4 8 oz glasses of
water (24-32 oz)
one hour prior to appointment time. The rest is the same as above.

Third trimester (7th through 9th months): Drink 1-2 8 oz glasses
of water (8-16 oz) The rest is the same as above.
Exam
Day:
- Please
arrive early on the day of the exam, to complete the registration
process. The technologist will come and escort you to the dressing
room, where you will change into a patient gown.
- Once
inside the exam room, the technologist will explain the exam to
you and answer any questions you may have. To begin the exam,
you will be asked to lie down on the table while the technologist
applies a small amount of gel to the area that is to be scanned.
The technologist will use a transducer, moving it across the area
to be examined while applying mild pressure.
- The
exam may take anywhere from 15 minutes up to an hour to complete.
After the exam, the technologist will assist you off the table
and you will be free to change and leave.
The
results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician, who will
explain them to you.

be advised that some pelvic exams require transvaginal examination.
Prostate
Ultrasounds:

be advised that Prostate Ultrasounds require cleansing enemas
and transrectal examination.
