X-Ray:

  • No special preparation is necessary for this exam.

Fluoroscopy:

GI / Small Bowel Series:

  • Please be advised that your stomach must be as empty as possible. You must not eat or drink after midnight the night before your exam, nor smoke or chew gum. You may brush your teeth, but avoid swallowing water.

During your Upper GI Exam:

  • Prior to your exam, you will be asked to change into a gown. In the examination room, the technologist will explain the procedure to you and help position you behind the x-ray machine, called a fluoroscope. He or she will give you some liquid barium and another mixture to drink which will enable the radiologist to see your digestive tract.

GallBladder Series:

  • The patient will need to pick up pills at the office. Follow instructions on package. The exam takes 30 minutes.

Barium Enema (BE)/Air Contrast Enema:

  • The patient will need to obtain Fleets Prep Kit #2 at local pharmacy and follow instruction for 24 hour prep. For children under 12 years of age - please call the office for specific instructions. The exam takes one hour.
  • Please note: It is normal for the barium to discolor your stools for a few days.

Please be advised that it is important to drink plenty of water for two days after your exam to avoid constipation which may occur following this exam.

Please feel free to bring a light snack with you to eat after your exam, especially if your are diabetic. You may resume your regular diet immediately unless you have been instructed differently by your physician.
